Better later .. than never ... or drekly as they say in Cornwall

It's been longer than I thought since I last posted. My how the time flies, must have been having great fun!

I could say it was because I have been busy working, and yes that is true. I have been busy - writing - a picture book. Well 2 picture books to be exact. These are now finished - until the next editing session. For me I find that leaving my work for at least 5 days, preferably 2 weeks, works best. I come back to it fresh and ready for the challenge of editing.

Many writers leave their work for a month before editing. This is not always practical as if you are writing to a deadline you may need to edit and send out quickly. For me 5 days is usually the optimum time. By the fifth day I am itching to restart. The story is burning into my brain and won't let me rest! It takes will power to leave it alone .... makes a change from writers block.

I don't really suffer from writers block. I am not convinced that it is a real 'writer's disease' but then for those that say they suffer from it I am sure they find it very real. Maybe I have just developed a strategy for getting round it, one that works well for me.

If I am finding that the words are drying up with a particular story or article, I don't chastise myself, I just move on and write something else, something completely different - like my blog! It is surprising how once you give your mind something else to think about it seems to want to get back to the original work. The block disappears. Other methods used by writers to overcome block is to, do a physical activity such as walking, running or washing the windows. The implication is that writers block is a state of mind and as such you should be able to exercise some control over it.

As a professional writer you cannot afford to have writers block. There is no one right way to cope with it if you are a sufferer. Find what works for you then just .. get on with your writing. No pain to gain - no writing no money!
